Sport Chek has managed to create the most digitally advanced store in Canada – and the grand opening is on Saturday, April 6th.
The store has been quietly open for the last few weeks, and I went to check it out last weekend. Matt Lappin-Fortin, the general manager at the new Yonge Street location in Toronto, gave me the full tour. I have to say, I was impressed!
Even from the outside, you can tell that the two-story Sport Chek is going to give you a new kind of experience. With an overwhelming banner of screens facing the street from the top floor (which Matt is hoping will broadcast sports games live later on), along with endless tablets next most of the merchandise, it took me a minute to realize I could actually interact with every inch of the store; there are over 140 digital displays!
There are enormous screens inside that you can use to explore soccer shoes and watch videos, along with a pretty fun Nike “VJ interactive experience” where you can create art and music by moving around shoes in front of a motion-sensor screen. I don’t know if that explains it, so hopefully you can try it and see for yourself! One of my favourite things? A screen that’s all about the athletic community near the store, showing everything from pictures of local sports teams to a schedule of classes at neighbourhood gyms, studios and more.
Beyond the interactive elements, you can get the kind of personalized treatment that I imagine Olympic athletes receive. There’s a treadmill that, along with an advanced computer system, picks your perfect shoe based on the way you run. You can use a digital kiosk to design your own Oakley shades that are assembled while you wait. And you can seriously customize a pair of Reebok shoes with all the colours of the rainbow; I had fun creating a particularly heinous pair on the computer that would definitely have people asking where I got them (although maybe not for the right reasons).
I only hope we get to see more stores like these open up around the country!
If you’re in the neighbourhood, which is precisely at 2529 Yonge Street, here are a few of the things you can expect at the grand opening on Saturday from 9am to 9pm:
