It’s summertime and you’ve snagged an internship in your field. If you’re lucky, you may even get paid (although I had no such luck during my four different internships). Hopefully, you’re a teensy bit younger than Vince Vaughan and Owen Wilson when they star in The Internship, which is out today, by the way!
You definitely want to look like a professional, so you don’t get overlooked as some immature slob, but remember that they already know you’re young. And they like it.
The best strategy for your internship attire is to look polished, but feel free to have a little fun with your outfit, too. Companies like to hire young people because we know things that the older fogeys don’t – like what’s hot in pop culture and how to use social media channels like a pro.
Of course, your level of formality will vary depending on whether you’re working for an ad agency or a financial institution, but these outfits will give you a general idea of the staples you should have in your summer internship wardrobe. Just don’t forget to inject a cool print or a pop of summer color.
A sharp blazer. Whether you’re going for a dressed-up navy or something closer to the realm of pink, a blazer is a super-easy way to pull a casual-looking outfit together when you’re rushing in the morning.
A comfortable pair of black shoes. They go with everything and you can run around for errands, whether it’s coffee or mailing out packages, but you’ll still look classy.
At least one sleek accessory. A watch or belt for the guys. A necklace or scarf for the girls. Just make sure you have one small item that stands out. It’s a great conversation piece and makes you look a little more grown up to have a touch of sophistication.
Versatile slacks. Everyone needs a good pair of dress pants. Get a neutral colour and great fit. They’ll work with a million different outfits.
A notebook. You’re there to learn, right? So you should be taking lots of notes to stay on top of things. Sometimes, having a nice notebook will make you want to write in it more, so get something you’ll be proud to carry around.
